4 stars because I needed to return the unit a couple of times to get one that worked. My unit now actually warms the water up a bit instead of just maintaining the temperature. I bought a remote controlled power outlet switch to safely turn the heater on and off while in the tub. I run an Airbnb and I have a Jacuzzi bathtub for two, it’s super romantic! The problem was the water would get cold so fast, since it’s such a large tub. This product solved that problem and my guests are very happy. I was worried not buying a brand name, but the cost savings were significant and so I took the risk. It was a little difficult to install, the directions weren’t super clear, and the illustration wasn’t detailed enough. Our set up was a bit different looking. So I called their customer support and actually talked to someone! We were afraid to install it on the wrong pipe and the support person gave us the info and confidence we needed to move forward. It needs to have it’s own dedicated electrical so, just factor in that cost as well, and that means you may need two different types of handy persons to help you install; electrical and plumbing. Overall, it was so worth it, guests are happy, which means, I am thrilled!

This thing is everything I hoped it would be. Works as advertised. Quite a bit bigger than I’d anticipated, but that’s a good thing.I used this as a replacement heater for my mini hot tub and it heated 240 gallons of water to 104° in about 24 hours. As you can see it comes with several different sized attachments for various pipe sizes. I connected it to standard 1-1/2″ pvc pipe that I got at Lowes.Nothing bad to say so far. I’ll update if/when it ever dies.My only gripe is that I had to wait for it, but they probably build them as needed. Not enough to take a star off.

This product is as simple as it gets – a 1.5KW electrical heater element in a grounded metal tube. Please do your BTU heat calculations to understand the realistic impact of what this is capable of – there are loads online so you don’t have to be a rocket scientist, you just need to know how many gallons your spa/small pool has.My use was a little unusual – I actually used it to help warm a ~3400 gallon “portable” kids pool in combination with a small solar heater at a fairly high latitude (NJ). This is *way* beyond what this heater is recommended for, but nevertheless I would estimate that running 24×7 it eventually over a week brought the pool temperature up by around 6-8F, which was the difference between my kids getting out of the pool complaining it was cold after 30 minutes vs staying in there for a couple of hours, so mission accomplished from my perspective. One catch anyone using this outside of a spa situation should know – the pressure switch does expect more psi than is typically seen in a pool filter pump return (think spa nozzles vs pool nozzle). For me, this meant that it would not switch on after installation – it would only do so if I partially covered the pool return nozzle with my finger to bring the pressure up. I appreciate the pressure switch is there as a safety to ensure that the unit gets enough flow not to overheat, so I didn’t want to dismantle the unit and disable the switch. Instead what I did was to find a way to slightly restrict the exit flow to the pool to bring the pressure up. If you do this yourself please be careful – if you restrict too much you may damage your pool pump over time, particularly if its a cheap consumer model. All in all happy.

I waited to review this heater, as I was skeptical about it’s performance. Now that I have some time on it, I can provide a legitimate review. I purchased this heater in April 13, 2020 and installed it a few weeks later. 1) It’s MADE IN THE USA…nothing better than that ! 2) It is VERY easy to install (it took less than a minute). 3) It heats 300 gallons of tap water (about 62 degrees F) at about 2 degrees per hour…We stopped at 90 F. It maintains the temp well with the aid of a temp controller (purchased separately). That is where the “GOOD” ends. Now for the “BAD”; I use no salts or chemicals in my bath water (just “soap” and “shampoo”, and my water flows though a whole-home softener / filter, so it is almost “pure”. After 4 months (almost to-the-day), the heating element has failed. Additionally, the internal pressure switch takes a pretty hefty pressure to get the element to activate (turn on). Luckily, I installed a shutoff valve downstream from the heater, so I could partially close the valve to provide some back-pressure so the element would activate (my system is 1-1/2″ PVC / Hose throughout). With the valve about 30-40% closed to get the pressure switch to power the element, I lose some of the flow to my “jet”…thus lose some circulation and the pleasure of a nice jet to sit in front of. Bottom Line – It worked well while it worked, but failed in a short time. The specifications state it has a 2-yr warranty. Now we get to see how good SpaGuts’ customer service is. If they take care of me and stand behind their product, I’ll upgrade my review to 4-stars. If not, I’ll leave it at 2 or maybe even 1-star, and encourage everyone NOT to buy SpaGuts products. (9/12/2020)UPDATE: As of Saturday, Oct 3, 2020: After returning my 4-month old heater to SpaGuts, they said they sent it “back to the manufacturer” who in-turn stated that my “heating element burst from water damage that is not covered under warranty”. They offered to sell me a new one for MORE THAN I PAID FOR THE ORIGINAL PLUS SHIPPING of $21 ! So, lesson learned…DO NOT BUY SPAGUTS PRODUCTS ! They claimed that the “reason” was because it was continuously submerged in water and not “drained after each use”. Also, it is “for indoor use in a bath tub only”. Finally, they stated my “burst” element was “wrapped in calcium”. There is no calcium in my water, so it must have come from my body or the soap / shampoo I use, and I could find no place where a WATER HEATER cannot be continuously submerged in water ! How friggin stupid is that ? So, ok…all you folks who want to use it outside, take a lesson from this. Also, you better plan on draining the tub after each use. Otherwise, you’ll spend $130 every 4 months. Good luck…
