02-06-2010 Before I bought this electric floor heating mat, I did my normal research. The biggest complaint that I found, albeit a somewhat dated one, was that when this floor mat got hot, it smelled, terribly. I even called the manufacturer and what they said, was that the problem was remedied by a change in the rubber compound. And that it would, even with the new compound still smell for a few days. At least they were being honest about it. They also suggested that if the smell was going to be a problem, just plug it in outdoors, in a protected area from the weather, etc., for a few days and that would work. I decided to take a chance, and bought it. When it arrived I just set it up on the floor, under my computer desk, which is in an unheated room of the house. It did smell for a few days, and to my thinking not to terrible. This is ‘subjective’ on my part, those of you who buy it, may find that the odor is objectionable. If so just plug it in outdoors for a few days, as suggested earlier. After about five days of continuous use the smell just faded away. The smell is now COMPLETELY gone, not a trace. My feet are warm, toasty, and I’m a happy camper. Three more comments/complaints. First)This mat does get quite warm, 90 watts of heat, ‘great’ if you’re standing on it with shoes on, not so great, if you’re seated, as I am at a desk, and kick your shoes off, and have either sock feet, or bare feet on it. It gets too warm for that. If I’m not mistaken there is an additional item that you can buy that will cut the heat down some, although I forget what it’s called. It amounts to some sort of a temperature control. Second)This item comes with NO on/off switch. Somewhat inconvenient to always have to plug and unplug it, in order to turn it on and off. (I never go away from the house and leave this item plugged in, and suggest that no one go away and leave this item or any other item like it plugged in, for safety reasons.) The least they could have done was to install an inline power switch. Minor complaint, I guess. The item mentioned above that can be purchased separately to control the temperature, may, or may not, have a power switch with it, I just don’t recall. Third)And this is just a comment, not a complaint. This mat does take a few minutes (5-10 min) to warm up. It also will take a few minutes to warm your feet as well, if you are wearing shoes or boots. All in all, I’m pleased with it, and my tootsies are toasty. I’m just sorry that I didn’t buy it sooner. I hope this review is helpful to those of you who may be contemplating buying this item. Signed, Warm Feet, Frazier Park, Ca.

I’ll start by saying that I am somewhat on the sensitive side when it comes to toxic smells. There is some rubber smell with our new Indus-Tool Cozy Electric Foot Warming Pad, but it is not very strong. I did not notice any smell upon removing the mat from its packaging. Upon heating up, I could smell the rubber (as could my husband and kids), but it wasn’t obnoxious enough that anyone commented upon it before I asked if they thought the smell was too strong. (I have a cold and worried I was just too stuffed up to notice the stench others mentioned.)Now, as far as the functionality of the mat, I am already in love! I bought this Warming Pad for my husband to use under his desk in the office, but I figured I would try it out myself first in case anything was wrong with it, like the super stink or not working out of the box.Our family room is an addition built over a section of the basement that doesn’t get warmed by the furnace. There is insufficient insulation, too. So I’m spending all my time sitting at a desk in a room that stays about 10 degrees (F) cooler than the thermostat, and the floor is particularly cold. It is really hard to feel comfortable without cranking up the heat to a ridiculous level that leaves other areas of the house much too warm. With the mat under my feet yesterday, I never got to that restless, must-go-raise-the-thermostat stage of the afternoon. Warm feet really do make a huge difference. In terms of energy savings, this is especially important in an old, under-insulated, single-zone heated house like mine.Another reviewer for either this size or the larger warming mat suggested using Carex Bed Buddy Warming Footies in conjunction with the heated pad. GENIUS! With Birkenstocks on, I couldn’t feel the heat radiating from the mat to my feet, and I really wanted to feel the heat as the day wore on. (I wasn’t cold, mind you, so it was already an improvement, but I wanted really cozy feet.) Wearing just socks, the Foot Warming Pad is actually too hot for me to rest my feet on for hours while I work. With the Bed Buddy Footies, I pre-warm the “bean bags” in the microwave, put them in the booties, and wear the booties on top of the Electric Foot Warming Pad. The booties stay comfortably warm ALL AFTERNOON (several hours+), much like a coffee cup warmer can keep a hot cup of coffee at ideal temperature though it wouldn’t be enough to heat that coffee up in the first place.I hope my husband tries the Indus-Tool Cozy Electric Foot Warming Pad and doesn’t care for it, because after two days with it, I’m loathe to give it up. If he wants to keep, I’ll definitely be back to order another one for myself.

Today’s date: February 6, 2014Product: Cozy Products FW Electric Foot Warmer Mat21” X 14” X quarter inch thick rubber heated matI have this mat sitting on a hard plastic tile floor which is laid on a 6 inch thick concrete base. You should not place this mat directly on carpet or fine wood floors without some sort of protective liner-mat between this rubber mat and the wood-carpet. If you use a protective liner made of junk wood (that you do not mind getting discolored) or junk carpet or cork or some other flame-resistant substance, you will be ok on fine wood or carpet. This mat would only be ideal for a pet (cat, dog, pig, rabbit – any sort of animal that sits on the floor) if the animal has the space-freedom to get on or away from the mat as necessary. This mat would not be ideal for pets if they chew on things. I use this mat when my floor temperature is between 30 degrees F and 60 degrees F.I am posting up this review because I see other buyers writing inaccurate (in my opinion) things about this product.Smell? This mat does not produce any smell. I cannot smell anything. From the first day I plugged this in until today, I have no idea when this thing is plugged in. It has never produced any smell. Perhaps the manufacturer changed the rubber compound. Perhaps early buyers of this product actually received a different mat which was made of something else.My smeller might not be terribly sensitive, but I can smell things burning in the oven and so forth. And I cannot smell anything originating from this mat. I have used this mat every day for two months now, and if it produced a smell, I would have noticed that smell by now.How warm? I can keep my bare feet on this mat constantly. It is not too hot. It is warm and toasty for my toes. Wearing shoes, socks – this mat is a nice addition but I can hardly detect how warm this mat is. If this mat is too warm for you, put on socks. I use this hours a day (every day) and it never gets too hot nor does it overheat. You could use something like the following (if this mat is too hot for you):http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FPCEGI/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1I do not use a dimmer control. I like this mat at 100% all the time when the floor temp is below 70 degrees F.Is this mat going to help in a cold unheated shop in Northern Wisconsin?Yes, it will help but this mat does not produce enough heat to overcome the extreme cold. So, sure, buy it, because it will make your feet more comfortable (as compared to standing on a cold bare concrete floor).Switch? My mat has an on-off switch. And a little in-cord indicator light is lit when this mat is plugged in and switched on. Very handy because the indicator light reminds you to turn the mat off when you are not using it, although this device does not use a lot of power. It is a good idea to glance at the mat at the end of the day – after you turn the overhead lights off.Other mats? I do not know of any other competitive products, so I cannot comment. I have not seen anything like it in local stores. What don’t I like about this product? Cannot think of any negatives. My rating: 5 stars with no reservationsWould I purchase this product again? Absolutely yesDo I recommend this product for you? Yes but read my notes above.Thank you

That said there are a few issues:First and foremost is the odor. As others have stated, this thing smells like it smells when you walk in the door of Harbor Freight Tools. I am writing this review after using it for only 2 hours, so it is entirely possible that the odor will fade with use. I have already noticed that the odor practically disappears when I turn it off, so it is somewhat promising in that regard.I am in a cube farm, so the odor isn’t concentrated like it might be in an actual office. If you are in an enclosed office, you might want to run this for a period of time at home in your garage to let some of the smell wear off. I will update this review regarding the odor in a few weeks or so to let you know if it fades. As seen in the photos, there is a pretty sizable nub where the power cable connects to the mat that runs at least 1/4th of the width of the mat. This affects the usable space on the mat a bit if you don’t like setting your feet on uneven surfaces. It would be far better if they somehow were able to move the nub to the edge of the mat. Also, I am a bit concerned about the chance of melted snow or spilled liquids creating a potential shock hazard, as there is a pretty sizable gap between the cord and the conduit which the cord runs inside the mat. I hope they have accounted for this possibility, but in order to be safe I will be waterproofing it myself. On to the heat. I suffer from cold extremities from Oct-March in this northern climate. I have tried a number of different ways to keep my feet warm and at my desk, I can already tell this is going to do the trick better and cheaper than any of the other options I have tried. It gives off a great amount of heat and uses far less electricity than a space heater. My toes are toasty. If the odor goes away, I have no problem bumping it up to a 4 star review. The two other design issues keep it from getting the almighty 5 star.UPDATE: One day in and the smell is virtually gone. My toes are toasty and I am happy.

Just got it yesterday and the indicator light on the switch stopped working already. This might explain why some reviewers complained that the mat stopped working after 1 day. Mat is still working, just the light on the switch is not. Ridiculous though to design it that way, but I will not return and will live with it.With regards to some reviewers that complained that it never reaches 135F please realize that placing the mat on the cold floor either concrete or engineered planks acts as a giant heat sink to draw heat away from the mat. Heat sinks are used on all electronic devices to protect them from overheating, your phone uses them. In this case, however, we do not want to heat sink the mat but keep the energy, so you have to insulate the mat from the floor by placing a cardboard under. You will reach comfortable temperature, close to what is specified. This is not a fire hazard at all, 135F will never ignite a piece of paper, you get much higher temps in your car on a sunny summer day and I doubt anyone’s Kleenex tissues ever caught on fire. With regards to rubber smell, yes, it is outgassing the rubber smell, but this is very subjective, it does not bother me personally, but I see how some people might not like it. I think it does not smell any worse than any other rubber mat you might buy for your front door. The oily film on the mat someone complained about is there because of manufacturing so it is easier to remove it from the mold after the mat is pressed so it would not stick. You can wash it off with soap, I used Windex and it worked.4 stars form me because of switch light issue, other than that I like the warm foot feeling of my feet in my basement office as I work from my home office every day.

EDIT 10/9/22: A month after I wrote my review the mat stopped working for no apparent reason. This is very disappointing, but I liked the product enough that I bought another one, exactly the same as the prior one. No issues so far with the new one.I purchased this mat in Sept 2021 and have used it on a daily basis since then. I have a basement home office and this mat keeps my toes warm on the vinyl/cement floor. We have cold, snowy winters where I live, so I bought to keep me warm during the cold months, and I’m still using it now during summer, as the cold air-conditioning tends to sink to the basement. So the floor of the room is cold year round, but my feet are warm now thanks to this mat! As far as temperature, I am happy with the low setting even when stocking footed. If my feet start getting hot, I set them to the side of the mat for a minute or on the legs of my office chair, and then they’re cool again within seconds. As far as power, I was concerned about forgetting to turn the mat off, so I connected it to a smart outlet that is scheduled to turn off every day at a set time in the evening. That way if I do forget to turn it off, it will only be left on for a few hours rather than for possibly days at a time. For the price it is an excellent value and has made a huge difference in my personal comfort while working at my desk. After 9 months of use, it appears to be in near-excellent condition with some light wear marks showing as would be expected from a rubber floor mat that is used daily. The mat is soft and pliable with no signs of cracking.I was cautious when I saw the photos from the reviewers who showed their mats cracking and falling apart. I decided to make the purchase anyway based on the large amount of positive feedback. After using the mat for 9 months I am left wondering how these other customer used their mats and if they left them turned on 24/7 for months? The rubber material of my mat is quite flexible and I don’t know how it could have become so brittle as to crack like this unless the mat had been extremely overheated for a significant period of time. My mat is showing no signs of cracking, nor does it seem to be getting hard or brittle. I have used it for 9 months, 8-10 hours per day, Monday-Friday, and sometimes for several hours on the weekends also.

I work from a desk at home and my feet are always cold. I have had cloth foot warmers that worked okay, but had to be straightened out or they would get caught up in my office chair.(also looked messy) This one lays flat and is very warm and looks tidy! The only negatives are it has a rubber smell, which I imagine will dissipate with time. Also it just has an “on/off” switch. It would be nice if It have a switch that I could turn it lower once my feet are warm. Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase!

I love this for my cold feet while working! My only complaint is that it does not auto shut off like it says – it will stay on for days and days until you shut it off. Auto off safety feature is needed but besides that it’s great!
